Street Style is Back: Meet Stefani

Last weekend, I had the supreme pleasure of being a +1 for the Black & White Gala at the National Arts Centre. All sorts of movers and shakers were there, including the Governor General, who looked as shiny, happy and lovely in real life as she does on television. I have to admit I was a little star struck.

While getting more than tipsy on the complimentary champagne, I ran into Stefani, a beautiful gal who interpreted the Black & White theme with just the perfect amount of glamour and sass that I had to get her photo.

What first drew me to Stefani's ensemble was her necklace (more on that later), but after giving her the full up-down treatment, I also took quite a shine to her dress (love the wrap waist and sheer peek-a-boo style she's rocking up top), and her classic round toe heel.

Now, on to the necklace. Doesn't it look like Stefani's décolleté is naturally bejewled? Well, it's really just the magic of Renée Lévesque, a local jeweler who sells her pieces at Bijoux Mode in the Market (24 Murray St., to be exact).

Amongst the recycled grad and bridesmaid dresses that seemed to accost me at every turn, Stefani's refined approach to gala-wear was a breath of fresh air last Saturday.

In typical Tracie fashion, not content to abide by someone else's fashion rules, I used my own interpretation of black and white to pull together my outfit for the gala. The end result was a blue dress with black accessories. While I normally stay away from featuring my own street style on Youth League, I thought the photo below would be a fun way to demonstrate "recessionista" dressing for a formal event. Hilda and I both put together our outfits for under $200 each, as per our tallies below.

Tracie (left):

Dress - $30 from MaryAnn Harris vintage
Belt - $8 from Sears
Tights - $20 from American Apparel
Bracelet - $5 from Claire's

Hilda (right):

Shoes - $20 from the Attic (now Young Jane's)
Necklaces - $80 total (MaryAnn Harris vintage)

The pussycat's meow

Sorry, guys! I know I'm a week late on this, but it's just too good to pass up. M.A.C has joined forces with Hello Kitty to launch a cosmetics collection in tribute to our favourite feline. I stopped by the M.A.C at Rideau Centre this weekend to get in on the action, and discovered the entire store to be in full-on Hello Kitty fever. Rightly so. The selection of pink lipglosses, shimmery eyeliners, and pastel nail polishes are just the right amount of cutesy, and the packaging is the icing on the cake.

I'm enthralled with the M.A.C commercial for the Hello Kitty collection, and I've included it below for your viewing pleaure.

Toronto Mini-Break

While I trust that all you lovely readers were busy playing The Game this weekend, I headed off to Toronto to take advantage of the long weekend. Despite spending many lay-overs at Pearson (and even sleeping on the airport floor this Christmas!), I have never done a bona-fide trip to Toronto. You might recall that I canceled my trip to L'Oreal Fashion Week in the fall so that I could splurge on a Soia & Kyo winter coat, so this weekend was officially my first trip to the T dot O dot.

And what a trip it was! My gosh.

We stayed at the Drake Hotel on Queen Street West, and it definitely lived up to the hype.

I really can't stop gushing about this hotel.

The food, the atmosphere, the staff, the night-life,  etc. etc. made for a very memorable stay.

Some other highlights of the trip included a karaoke fundraiser for Worn Fashion Journal at Cameron House, and a show at Rancho Relaxo in Chinatown, where we caught local bands Young Flux and Pirate/Rock. Mother's Dumplings on Huron and Dundas were the shit, seeing The Submarines play at The Drake Hotel Underground was a lot of fun, and the galleries on Queen Street West were a breath of fresh air.

Now on to the fashion. What is with all the beautiful people in Toronto? I mean, seriously! Everywhere I looked there were hot stylish people strolling by. I suspect they shop at Carte Blanche and Fawn, my two new favourite stores.

Keeping in mind that I had three days to explore the city, this is certainly not an exhaustive list of Toronto fashion, but rest assured I walked my butt off in search of the hottest stores on Queen Street West.

First up is 69 Vintage, located next to The Social, a bar I'm told is a preferred location for the cool kids.

This store would fit right in on the Lower East Side of NYC, with its loft-style interior and well-curated selection of vintage clothes and accessories.

Next up is Fawn at 967 Q st W, which is tops in my books.

This shop has the perfect collection of edgy, wearable and avant garde pieces. You'll find a lot of neutral dresses and blouses with unique cuts and drapping, fabulous denim, vintage heels and necklaces you could wear as a stand-alone piece, if only it was more socially acceptable to sport nothing more than a chunky chain around one's neck. I picked up a black hooded tee from Complex Geometries here, and I feel so damn good in it.

Carte Blanche, at 758 Q st W, is also multiple levels of fabulous.

I picked up a bandage skirt here and a lovely men's wool sweater, both of which I know I'll be busting out at every possible occasion.

Carte Blanche's house line Pink Cobra is sexy, edgy, and perfect for a night out. Not content to stop there, the girls will also be exclusively carrying Gareth Pugh, along with their usual roster of designers from all over the globe.

In need of new glasses this year, I began my preliminary search at Spectacle at 752 Q st W. I'm completely smitten with a pair of vintage Cazal's, but I've received conflicting reports from friends and strangers on whether these frames are all they're cracked up to be.

A little too much turquoise plastic maybe? Let a girl know!

I picked up a shirt for my BF's t-shirt collection at Magic Pony, a must-see for those with a heart on for Japanese-influenced art. Check this boutique out at 694 Q st W.

Who would have thought that a year after Bruno's beautification in which it took us nearly eight hours in Montreal to find him that "perfect" pair of shoes, he would acquire a pair of Creative Recreation kicks in no time flat for nothing shy of $62.

The secret is Heel Boy at 682 Q st W.

Balisi at 711 Q st W isn't too shabby either. I picked up a pair of peach Vivienne Westwood heels here, and let me tell you, spring can't come fast enough.

Last up is Old Times Antiques at 607B Q st W. We found this little treasure trove in our last hour in Toronto, and I am so glad we stumbled upon it. I picked up a vintage broach and necklace, both of which were $20 each.

Toronto was tons of fun. I'm sad that we didn't have more time to explore, but we'll just have to go back for another visit. If you have any recommendations for things to see or do, put 'em here.

Book of the Month: Agent Provocateur's The Game

In time for Valentine's Day, I present to you February's Book of the Month: The Game by Agent Provocateur.

I have a confession to make though: The Game isn't really a book; it just looks like one. Inside the panel that is meticulously disguised as a thick novel is all the makings for a fabulous night of strip poker.

In true Agent Provocateur fashion, there is no better way to show off your stylish sous-vetements than with a naughty game of poker with you and your entourage. That's right -- this game isn't designed for a one-on-one competition (although I have it on good authority that it can easily adapt). Perfect for all you non-attached girls and boys, the Agent Provocateur set is best suited for a game of up to six players.

This season, Agent Provocateur has created three lingerie collections: Pirates, Witches, and Virgins, and I really can't think of a better way to spend Valentine's Day then at a themed soiree with beautiful people drinking champagne while engaged in fierce competition over the poker chips, pasties just a layer away.

Kania

Local designer Stacey Bafi-Yeboa has just launched her new website for her collection Kania. You might remember her from Ottawa Fashion Week, or have seen her pieces at Hush Boutique in Westboro. Whether you're new to Kania or a longtime fan, I think you'll be excited about what Stacey's cooked up for Spring-Summer 2009. My favourite pieces are:

The Goddess - $229, a wrap-around dress that doubles as a light jacket
Lavish - $229, a slinky, one-piece jumpsuit
Fashionista - $110, a knee-length skirt with cropped skinny pants underneath
Dolly - $110, an adorable high-waisted mini

Stacey's got a Kania trunk show scheduled at the Westin on February 12th, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. I highly recommend y'all check it out.

Black Swan

After working backstage at Capital Fashion Week in November, I came away with a brand new crush: Las Valentias. Erin and Tara, the lovely gals behind this Toronto brand, kindly lent me some pieces from their Spring/Summer 09 collection for a shoot with Daniel Weinand.

We were going for a "beautiful girl goes insane while battling good and evil in her head" kind of concept, and believe it or not, I actually managed to track down a really creepy antique wheelchair to add that perfect element of macabre to the images. Have a look:

These photos didn't make the final cut, but I love them anyways and just had to share them with you.
